A short but very good article about dog body language and some of the signs that they are not comfortable in a situation.

Thank you to Claire Wilkinson for finding this one.

A really clear blog post discussing some reasons why dominance theory and dominant training do not work.  I totally agree with her.

Defra have announced the draft of the Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Bill today.

Major points being:

  • potential of prosecution of owners, or persons in control of, dogs attacking assistance dogs
  • consideration of the owner’s character when considering the exemption from destruction of an individual dog considered to be a banned dog or type
  • potential of prosecution of owners, or persons in control of, dogs attacking/injuring someone on private property (including other peoples property), although this will not extend to trespassers.  This means delivery personnel would be protected but not burglars.

More details can be found here Defra DDA News including a link to the full document.

Dogs Recognise Their Own Species

According to this study dogs do not see humans as dogs but, despite their huge range of different physical breed characteristics, recognise their own species. Just one more reason I do not need to ‘show natural dog behaviour and dominate my dog’. I’m not a dog and my dogs will never see me as one.

An excellent article explaining thresholds of distance. duration and intensity when dealing with over-stimulated (Jules, Zen, Sky, Sox), fearful (Bodmin and Poppy W before they came to class) and aggressive dogs, and how to apply them to your training plan.
