As it is difficult for me to arrange groups for workshops and courses at the moment, I have added an online canine first aid course to the shop for you to access.

The course is just one of many run by Canine Principles so take a look at the others they have on offer too.

All Canine Principles online dog courses have been written by qualified professionals with expertise on their chosen subject. Care has been taken to create a course library that is based on only the most up to date dog science. The courses teach dog training and behaviour following the science of positive reinforcement and reward based training.

This is one of my favourite images for provoking thought about dogs and hot weather.  Most of them concentrate on cars or pavements but just being at home, in the garden or on a non-pavement walk still has risks.  This chart helps you consider YOUR individual dogs risk and is one of the few that draws attention to the fact that elderly dogs struggle more than young (+6m) and middle aged dogs.

I enjoyed teaching our winter series of the APDT Good Companion Awards.  It was gratifying to see handler skills and understanding of training methods progress, and to see relationships between dog and handler improve, as well as friendships made between class members. It is highly likely that this format will be repeated next winter.

Congratulations to all the successful candidates, particularly to those receiving the very first Beginner and Jubilee Awards.

Based on the title, don’t dismiss this post as being one of those  ‘TV dog trainer/dog training is easy/instant solution/Harry Potter’ type!!!!!  You know I would never do that to you!

Actually a very good post about changing dog behaviour and how behaviours do not have to be classed good or bad, they can be normal but unwanted (those of you from class will have heard a lot of the points before but this is well written and so good back up).

Dogs Recognise Their Own Species

According to this study dogs do not see humans as dogs but, despite their huge range of different physical breed characteristics, recognise their own species. Just one more reason I do not need to ‘show natural dog behaviour and dominate my dog’. I’m not a dog and my dogs will never see me as one.

An excellent article explaining thresholds of distance. duration and intensity when dealing with over-stimulated (Jules, Zen, Sky, Sox), fearful (Bodmin and Poppy W before they came to class) and aggressive dogs, and how to apply them to your training plan.

Avoid Choke Chains At All Costs!

Although any equipment can be misused, I think (bar the voice) the choke chain has to be the item most abundantly available and overused by ill-informed/uneducated pet owners.  They are readily available in many pet shops without any instructions – good or bad.

Please note that as a member of the APDT I do not allow choke chains or slip leads in class.  There are alternatives to help you with lead walking/pulling – just ask 🙂

Find a clinical animal behaviourist – Animal behaviour experts.

To complement the general dog training advice and guidance given in class, as a member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors, I also offer full behavioural consultations for you and your dog.  Consultations can only be undertaken after a medical check up and referral from your veterinary surgeon (please contact me at Mail@animalmagicdogtraining.com for the necessary forms).

Members of ASAB and APBC work extremely hard for both their initial entry qualifications and in continued professional development.  There are no quick fixes and a lot of ‘whisperers’ out there – please consult actual professionals.
